Now let's get into today's video: the top five things that the most successful solopreneurs do. I have been a solopreneur for over 10 years, over 12 years, it's been a while! And over those years, I have worked with many solopreneurs as well in my clients as one to one coaching clients or in my e-courses or just as my peers you know, community and that kind of thing. And as a result, for my own business and for all of the solopreneurs that I've been friends with and worked with, these are some of the key things that I have really noticed that those top successful solopreneurs do…
The first thing that the most successful solopreneurs do is to define success on your own terms.
This is about not worrying about what everyone else is doing or what everyone else wants you to do. This one can be very sneaky. It is very easy to live our lives or build our businesses based on what we think we should do, based on prestige and what other people perceive as success, without really thinking about what we want.
This is something that you always want to bring back and really understand, “What does success actually mean to me, versus what does it mean to society, versus what does it mean to my peers or my family or my mentors etc?” What they all view as success doesn't really matter when it comes to your own business.
So it's really about defining what success means on your terms: Until you actually understand what your definition of success is — not what your past self wanted, or what society wants you to do or anything like that — once you once you determine what your version of success is, then you can start working toward it. Right: So defining success on your own terms is the first thing that every successful solopreneur does.
Number two is to develop self honesty and self trust skills.
This can be very difficult for a lot of people to get really honest with themselves. And to also trust yourself. These are lifelong ongoing skills. These are a practice that you'll want to build on a continual basis.
And this really includes you know, doing routine check ins and assessments. So really looking and critiquing what you've been doing in your business: What is working, what isn't working, why is that, what needs to change? What do you want to change? Where have you maybe been dropping the ball or where have you been putting a lot of effort into something that maybe isn't what you really want to be working on? All of those types of things, developing those self trust and self honesty muscles.
The third thing that every successful solopreneur does is to focus on energy management over toxic hustle culture.
So here is where you are prioritizing your own personal values. You're also prioritizing resting, real breaks, genuine breaks that actually rejuvenate and refresh you when you return to work.
So actually taking a step back from your desk, leaving the office, putting a vacation responder on, working on a schedule that actually makes sense for your unique needs, your unique lifestyle, your brain, your personality. All of those types of things, focusing very much on managing your unique energy levels.
And I have to say I have a lot of experience with all of these for sure. Over my many years as a solopreneur this one has been very important for me. I have chronic anxiety, chronic insomnia and chronic nightmares. I've had them my entire adult life. And so focusing on energy management has been absolutely crucial. Because I never know what my energy levels might be like, what from one day to the next right. I never know if I'm going to have a terrible sleep one night so what am I going to do the next day, managing my energy really effectively and building up my business so that it accommodates energy management has been crucial for my success as a solopreneur.
The fourth thing that every successful solopreneur does is to customize and simplify everything.
So no more cookie cutter templates, right? No more copying and pasting what you see other people doing without, you know, customizing it to your unique situation. No more overcomplicating things unnecessarily.
A big mistake that I see many solopreneurs make is over complicating things or thinking, “It can't be that simple. I need to add on all these bells and whistles that aren't actually useful.” Every successful solopreneur is very cautious about this and really works on simplifying things as much as possible.
And by the way, pretty much everything can always be simplified a little bit more and customizing everything to your unique situation. Your unique lifestyle, business goals, vision values, your unique brain and personality and learning style and all of these types of things built into it.
And the fifth thing that every successful solopreneur does is to balance planning with taking action.
This includes blending mindset with strategy, being very intentional and very mindful of everything that you are doing. So ensuring that you have a very, very good mindset around things, that you are working through any internal bottlenecks that might be coming up, and also taking very strategic intentional action on your different plans.
Being very action oriented in that sense, not just taking action for the sake of it or just coming up with an idea and running with it, but rather, coming up with an idea, having those strategies in place for how to then implement it, and then taking action on it. So really balancing the two.
Most solopreneurs tend to lean too far from one side or the other, spend a lot more time in planning mode and never taking action or else taking that immediate action and never actually taking a step back to plan accordingly. Both can be problematic and both can hinder your success. You want to make sure that you've a very good balance between the two.
