Confidence issues can be killer—especially in the world of business!
Something I hear again and again from people is that they haven’t taken the leap to do XYZ (usually things like pitching their services to clients, quitting their day jobs, and asking for a raise) because they don’t feel confident in themselves or their ability.
Sound like you?
You need to use some confidence-boosting strategies!
Here are 3 steps to boosting your confidence in business:
1) Get more experience.
Honestly? Sometimes you just need some practice at your skill!
The more experience/education you can get with something, the more you’ll start to see that you are legitimately deserving of a pay increase, for example. If you feel like you should be better at something, then figure out a way to get better at it.
At the same time, it’s important to recognize when you need more experience compared to when you are hiding behind this stage as an excuse. If you have 10+ years of experience in your field, for example, you probably need to move onto the next two steps!
(Of course, we can all always learn more. But in terms of building your confidence, if you already have a ton of experience/education and you still don’t feel confident, then getting even more experience probably isn’t going to make much of a difference to improving your confidence.)
2) Remind yourself that you are an authority.
This one’s efficacy is fascinating to me because it’s really about getting into the mindset shift. Tell yourself every day that you are good at what you do. If you don’t feel confident just yet, PRETEND that you feel confident.
“Fake it til you make it” really does work when it comes to increasing your confidence!
(You can help yourself along with that by using confidence-boosting mantras for your business.)
3) Know your strengths and limitations.
You need to be able to be honest with yourself here… and that means recognizing what you are good at AND where you can stand to improve.
This third step is so, so important. When you can identify what your strengths are and what your limitations are, when you can take a step back and look critically at the situation after you make a mistake and figure out exactly where things went wrong, when you can take action to rectifying that mistake so you don’t make it again in the future, and when you can OWN that you are good at what you do, you will get farther ahead, faster.
Note: While these confidence-boosting strategies are geared towards becoming more confident in business, they are also totally applicable in life!
So much of it comes down to being honest with yourself about your own abilities, pushing yourself forward a little bit further every day, and getting into the right mindset.
