“How did you become a productivity coach?
How did you figure out it was the right niche for you?”
Today I’m answering the question about how I became a productivity coach—it’s story time!
(This was originally an Instagram Live that I did back in August 2021—follow me on Instagram to keep this conversation going or ask any other questions you have about my business and how we can work together)
Quick summary of my story from the above video:
I've had my business for over a decade and started focusing specifically on anti-hustle productivity strategizing & success coaching within the past three years or so.
My company started out with freelance writing and editing, and then I got into a lot of teaching workshops and doing public speaking as part of some of my contracts… and as my business grew, other aspiring freelancers asked me questions about how they could do it, too.
I created my first online course in 2016, which was all about how to start and build a successful freelancer. I started teaching about working from home specifically (rather than the productivity side)... and interestedly, the BEST results that my clients/students consistently got were that they had much more clarity in their goals, they were getting more organized and focused, etc.
…Basically, I was getting my clients the best results when it related back to productivity, even though I wasn’t marketing myself as a productivity specialist at the time! I was teaching about productivity before I even realized that I was doing it 😉
At that point, I was also developing a lot of my signature anti-hustle productivity methodologies so that I could a) enjoy all of my multi-passionate interests, and b) still be productive even while managing my own chronic anxiety, nightmare disorder, and insomnia.
Quick overview of identifying your own niche, especially as a coach or consultant—a few key pieces of advice:
- Focus on what feels fun & natural to you (psst… ANY idea can probably be turned into a profitable business idea)
- Pay attention to what people are asking for and where they get the best results from you (note: you don’t need to niche down right away or even at all)
- Be strategic—create a strategic action plan with your base idea (do a business planning retreat, start implementing your strategy, and then assess & pivot on an ongoing basis)
